Mocha Nut Balls

We always made these at Christmas. They aren't very sweet, so I didn't like them until I was in college.


  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp instant coffee
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 3/4 cup sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 cups finely chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1/4 cup bourbon (optional)
  • confectioners sugar to coat


  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  2. Cream butter, sugar, bourbon, and vanilla until light. Add coffee, cocoa powder, flour, and salt and mix well. Add nuts, Shape into 1 inch balls.
  3. Bake approx 15 minutes. Cool and roll in confectioners sugar.
  4. Makes 72 cookies.

The bourbon is optional, but why WOULDN'T you use it?
